Employers Pay Huge Costs to Ex-Worker Suffering From Mesothelioma
Carillion (Singapore) Ltd, formerly known as Brightside Heating & Engineering, paid a compensation of 181,000 pounds to a 64-year-old former worker diagnosed with mesothelioma, a deadly asbestos-related cancer. Thompsons Solicitors reached a settlement with the employer for the payment of costs on behalf of the ex-employee. The man was diagnosed with the fatal cancer in March 2009, and the solicitors secured his compensation within five months of filing the suit before the Royal Court of Justice mesothelioma fast track system.
The victim, who has retired as operations manager, contracted mesothelioma in the 1960s when he was working as a fitter’s mate with Carillion, and was engaged in fitting pipes in a new building owned by Westminster University in central London.
The victim said he knows chemotherapy is available to him by the NHS, but he is not very sure of the outcome of the treatment. He feels it can make his life more difficult. He said that his family is not giving up hope and is trying to find a better and more affordable cure for his condition. He added that the early payment of compensation has been a blessing, which will enable him to go for private treatment abroad if needed.
A representative of Thompsons Solicitors Helen Jones pointed out that the outcome of the case clearly indicated payment of compensation during the lifetime of a suffering employee is not only helpful to him but also to his family. She said that in this case, it ensured affordability for alternative treatment for the victim, which could not have been possible otherwise.
For anyone involved in major building, maintenance or refurbishment work compliance with Construction (Design and Management) Regulations is compulsory.
