British Holidaymakers Still Spend Big despite Recession

Despite continued economic upheaval British holidaymakers are still preparing to spend well over £4 billion in preparation for their trips this year.

An estimated £4.4 billion will be spent this year on pre-trip treats such as clothing, cosmetic treatments, books and gadgets, according to a new study from online tour operator ebookers.com. Brits are still planning on taking family holidays despite the slump in the economy.

The Cost of Your Case Study polled more than 4,000 UK adults and uncovered that the average holiday suitcase will contain around £92 of new items.

For example, British fashion fans aren’t letting the credit crunch get in the way – with over a fifth hitting the high street and buying a new wardrobe for their break.

Almost a quarter will also splurge on something special and buy new clothes for their long weekend away, compared the 58 per cent of the population who will buy a new wardrobe for their week long holiday abroad – despite clothes often costing less on the continent.

Claire Howard-Jones, head of marketing for ebookers.com, said: “While the credit crunch is placing more pressure on us to make our pounds go further, Brits aren’t foregoing the smaller luxuries ahead of their holiday.

“It’s important for holiday makers to become savvy packers and save on costs before they jet off to ensure they don’t compromise their holiday savings before they arrive at their destination.”
